THE COURSE
For racers concerned about the Bank of America Chicago Marathon course—do not worry! According to the race’s official website, the course is “flat and fast.” Unlike the Rock and Roll San Diego Marathon’s “Highway to Hill”—where racers face a grueling 365-meter elevation gain on a closed freeway—Chicago’s most challenging incline is far less daunting. Nicknamed “Mount Roosevelt,” this slight uphill stretch appears just before the finish line on Columbus Drive. Known as the climb before the finish, Mount Roosevelt challenges racers’ endurance in the last few minutes of the course.
One of the most beloved features of the Chicago Marathon is its scenic route. Starting in the iconic Grant Park, participants navigate their way through 29 Chicago neighborhoods. These diverse and vibrant districts give athletes a full city tour as they push through 26.2 miles. With nearly 1.7 million spectators lining the course railings, runners are motivated by endless cheers—from the Lincoln Park Zoo to Chinatown.
IMPORTANT GEAR TIPS
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon does not permit the use of “back-loaded” hydration packs. That means Nathan hydration vests that use rear bladders—such as the Pinnacle Pro 12—are prohibited. Luckily, Nathan’s front-loaded race vests are approved for Chicago!
If maximizing storage is a priority, our Pinnacle Breeze 4 Liter delivers with four quick-access pockets, a large pocket that fits a foldable light jacket and a sixth pocket for additional storage. This vest also features two 14oz soft flasks with extended straws—the ideal combination of ample hydration and accessibility. The Pinnacle Breeze 4 Liter is available in unisex and women’s sizing for finding the perfect fit!
For runners looking for a sleek build, the Nathan QuickStart 3.0 4 Liter is a unisex vest designed for maximum comfort. Two soft flasks with push-pull bite valves ensure a bounce-free run, and its breathable mesh prevents runners from overheating.
If storage is not your top priority, the Marathon Waist Pack 3.0 is the lightweight belt you will need come October 12th. It’s one-size-fits-most and has a spacious pocket for your phone, gels, or other race day essentials. Paired with the Pinnacle Soft Flask Handheld 18oz, this combo will keep you hydrated and prepared for your Windy City Marathon.
WEATHER
The race is a little over a month away, and while you may not feel race-ready just yet, be prepared for how the weather may affect your performance. Typically, Chicago autumns are in mid-50s range with early morning mist. For most runners, this weather offers prime flexibility.
If you are accustomed to chilly mornings, running shorts and a compression shirt will do just the trick. However, if you tend to overheat, opt for a sports bra or go shirtless—just be prepared to brave a brisk start. While California natives might find the Chicago Marathon air to be a bit cold, Midwest runners should feel right at home.
MENTAL PREP
Mental preparation is just as crucial as physical training when gearing up for a marathon. Pre-race stress is real! And no amount of physical training can brace an athlete for the mental and emotional obstacles on every course.
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon recommends a training packet created by certified Nike coaches. This training program advises all racers to take rest days, stating, “sometimes the best run is no run.” These rest days should allow your body to recover and give your mind space to reset and refocus. Allotting this time for yourself could be vital to you at the starting line when all the race day worries come flooding in.
